National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary: The best spot to view gharials and mugger crocodiles in Ranthambore

National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary

In Ranthambore there are many exciting places to hold your interest. National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary is one example here. With the mere mention of the name, it would be easy to guess what species you will be spotting here. These are gharials and mugger crocodiles. Today, we’ll be able to give you an overview of this activity and its location.

National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary: The best place to view the daunting reptiles

National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary is a spectacular tourist spot for wildlife enthusiasts. They can see the daunting reptiles moving in water or basking in the sun. It is as exciting as viewing Bengal tigers at the safari zones in Ranthambore National Park. Located in Sawai Madhopur at Palighat, this wildlife sanctuary is home to gharials, crocodiles and other water inhabitants, which you can see via boat ride. If you wish to make your tour more engaging, then don’t forget to skip this wildlife sanctuary from your itinerary list. It is at a distance of 45 km from Ranthambore Tiger Reserve.

Foundation

The National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary was founded on September 30, 1978, when it was conveyed in Order No. 17-74/77-FRY (WL). It got sanctuary status under Section 18(1) of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. The project officer is responsible for administering this sanctuary, administered by the Department of Forest. Its headquarters are in Morena, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the famous tourist spots you should visit with your family or friends. In other words, this place is ideal for any reptile lover.

Spotting gharials, crocodiles and other species

When coming to the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary, the famous attractions you would spot here are gharials and marsh crocodiles. You would see them floating in the water or venturing into the sand to sunbathe. This is when you should be ready with your cameras or binoculars to capture their moves. However, these reptiles are not the only species you would be seeing here; but would get the sights of other inhabitants, including turtles, fish, smooth-coated otters, and even Gangetic dolphins.

Among the avian species, you would spot birds like Indian skimmers, common cranes, black-necked storks, lapwings, sarus cranes, and many others. This sanctuary is also a habitat for land animals like jungle cats, porcupines, hyenas, foxes, hares, golden jackals, wild boar, nilgais, and even wolves.

Knowing the difference between a gharial and a crocodile

People often mistakenly consider a gharial and a crocodile the same. But they need to understand the difference between the reptiles. The difference lies in the shape of their snouts. Crocodiles have V-shaped snouts with salt glands and prefer living in saltwater. In contrast, gharials have very thin snouts and inhabit freshwater rivers.

Compared to these species, alligators have U-shaped snouts and live in freshwater regions. They are all apex predators who swiftly hunt their prey with their formidable jaws and sharp-edged teeth. Unlike crocodiles and alligators, gharials have become endangered species. National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary is an excellent step in providing a safe habitat for protecting these reptiles from extinction. To know about the price of the Chambal Gharial safari, you can visit the official website of Ranthambore National Park.
