Manikaran: A Place In Manali Known For Its Natural Hot Springs

Scenic view of Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib by the river surrounded by greenery

Among many famous tourist attractions  in Manali is Manikaran in Kullu district, nestled at 5200 ft above sea level. Located in Parvati Valley on the banks of river Parvati, this place is a pilgrimage site not just for Sikhs, but also for Hindus. If you have any plans for a hilly tour, don’t skip Manikaran during your journey. Now, let’s know what makes this sacred place a must-visit in Manali.

Manikaran: What makes it a popular tourist spot in Manali

Manikaran is a place in the Kullu district and is one of the top places to visit in Manali for its hot springs, picturesque views  and other noted sites. But what attracts the attention the most are its hot springs which have magical properties in healing skin diseases if one bathes into it.

According to locals here, it is said that Manikaran is the place where sage Manu led the existence of human life after the great flood. Owing to mythological significance, there is a story behind the emergence of natural hot springs. This you will know when you visit:

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara

The first version of the hot springs lies at Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara. It is also called as Sri Guru Nanak Devji Gurudwara. The place has a mention in the Twelfth Guru Khalsa. The pious visit of Guru Nanak and his five disciples made this place a highly revered place of worship for Sikhs. The community kitchen of this gurudwara serves free food (langar) to the poor and needy people.

Now, coming to the story behind the natural hot springs, it all happened when the followers of Guru Nanak Dev became concerned about the cooking due to the absence of fire. Guru Nanak Dev then ordered them to lift the stone, which led to the emergence of hot boiling water. The water here has healing properties due to the presence of uranium and other radioactive elements that can heal diseases.

Kulant Pith

Kulant Pith is a holy shrine for Hindus as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who, according to locals, has stayed at this place for some time after liking it. His stay here marks the purity which makes this place sacred. Another reason for which the place is known is Vishnu Kund. It is considered holy as it is said to cleanse all sins and anger when dipping here. It says that when you boil food here, you will attain moksha and reach Vishnu Lok.

Shri Ramchandra Temple

In Manikaran, there is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Ram. It was built during the reign of Raja Jagat Singh in the 17th century. The temple houses a glorious idol of Lord Ram with his consort, Sita. Located in the centre, it has 3 halls and 40 rooms for the devotees. The temple authorities serve langar to everyone.

Shiva Temple

In India, numerous temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, the ever-pleasing and innocent Hindu god. Manikaran has a temple dedicated to the latter deity and is frequented by devotees. The shrine faced slight damage and tilted due to an earthquake in 1905. According to locals, even the devtas of Kullu worship Shiva in this temple.
